Cross-Country Skiing & Snowshoeing

Glide through glades of thick hemlocks, the sounds of your skis as your only company. Marvel at frozen waterfalls transformed by the cold of winter. It’s all part of the snowy season in the Porcupine Mountains and Ontonagon County in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

ENJOY OUR WINTER WONDERLAND

Cross-country skiers and snowshoers will find a peaceful winter respite as they explore more than 25 miles of groomed cross-country ski trails surrounding the Porcupine Mountains Winter Sports Complex, which also offers ski and snowshoe rentals. Those looking to truly get away from it all can travel further into the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, which opens its nearly 90 miles of trails for ungroomed cross-country skiing.

SNOWSHOE THE PORCUPINE MOUNTAINS

Slowly admire the nature surrounding you as you shuffle through feet of fresh snow. Listen to the wind rustle through the trees, the waves of Lake Superior, and the crunch of the snow beneath you. Snowshoeing in the Ontonagon area is a great way to relax outdoors during the colder months.

Whether you’re exploring lantern-lit trails under the stars or trekking deep into quiet old-growth forest, the Porkies deliver amazing winter experiences for every skill level.

Winter Sports Complex

The park’s Winter Sports Complex serves as the hub for snowshoeing, with more than 25 miles of groomed trails and access to an additional 90+ miles of ungroomed terrain throughout the park.

  • Snowshoe Barn rentals are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • Guided winter hikes are offered throughout the season.

Superior Snowshoe Trail (Lantern-Lit Loop)

Located near the ski hill, this family-favorite 1.5-mile loop glows with soft lantern light on Saturday evenings in winter. Snowshoers are welcome to break their own path, creating a magical atmosphere perfect for all ages.

Escarpment Trail

One of the Porkies’ most iconic winter routes, the Escarpment Trail, features sweeping views of Lake of the Clouds and the Carp River Valley from dramatic bluffs. It’s an unforgettable snowshoe experience on a clear winter day.

Presque Isle River & Waterfalls

On the far west end of the park, the Presque Isle River offers a scenic winter walk to a series of frozen waterfalls. The wooden bridges and river gorge create a stunning contrast against the snow.

Lake of the Clouds

The legendary Lake of the Clouds Overlook is accessible by snowshoe via several routes, including sections of the Escarpment Trail. This quiet, snow-covered vista is one of the most photographed winter scenes in Michigan.

West & East River Trails

These peaceful riverside trails wind through hemlock and hardwood forest, offering beautiful views and excellent opportunities for wildlife tracking after fresh snowfall.
