Hunting Opportunities in the Western UP

The Western UP offers a wide variety of game species and natural resources, each presenting its own challenge and reward. Here’s a breakdown of the key hunting opportunities:

  • Whitetail Deer: The most popular game species in Michigan, whitetail deer are abundant in the UP. The region is known for its large-bodied deer, thanks to the area’s diverse ecosystems. The thick forests and cedar swamps provide cover and food, while the expansive wilderness allows for a fair chase.
  • Black Bear: The UP is prime territory for black bear hunting, and the Western UP is home to a healthy population. Bear season is carefully regulated, and hunters need to enter a lottery to receive a bear tag. The vast forests, especially around Ontonagon, are perfect habitats for these majestic animals.
  • Small Game & Upland Birds: For those interested in hunting small game, the UP offers excellent opportunities for grouse, woodcock, and snowshoe hare. The region’s thick cover and wetlands create the ideal environment for bird hunting, making it popular for hunters with bird dogs.
  • Waterfowl: With its many rivers, lakes, and wetlands, the UP also offers excellent waterfowl hunting. Ducks and geese migrate through the area in the fall, offering an exciting challenge for those willing to brave the elements.
  • Rock Hunting: Our freshwater beaches contain a plethora of rock types from agates to yooperlites. Spend some time relaxing by Lake Superior while you look for your favorite rock type.
  • Mushroom Hunting: You will find a wide variety of tree types in Ontonagon County, making for a large range of mushrooms. Common types are Lions Mane, Puffball, Chicken of the Woods, Morels, and Chanterelles.
  • Fall Color Hunting:  There are many locations with overlooks where you can see miles of autumn colors. The highest point in the Porcupine Mountains is Summit Peak. A more accessible lookout is Lake of the Clouds.

Hunting Tips for the Western UP

  • Scout Early: Given the vastness of the Western UP, scouting early and often is crucial. Look for well-used deer trails, signs of bear activity, and areas with dense cover for grouse or other small game.
  • Use Topographical Maps: Familiarize yourself with the landscape by studying maps and using GPS devices. Certain areas do not have cellphone service, so be prepared for that situation. The area’s rugged terrain can be disorienting, so having a good sense of direction and terrain is crucial.
  • Pack for Success: The remoteness of the Western UP means hunters need to be self-sufficient. Bring plenty of food, water, and safety gear. It’s also wise to pack emergency supplies such as a fire starter, first-aid kit, and extra clothing.
  • Patience with Weather: Weather can change rapidly in the UP. It’s not uncommon to experience snow in early November or rainstorms in September. Patience and preparedness are key to success. Keep an eye on the weather to see if there have been recent rain storms. Storms help mushrooms fruit and bring new rocks to the beaches. They also blow all the colorful leaves off the trees.
